How to Hem Jeans: A Simple Guide for Sewing Beginners

Hemming jeans and some other hard fabrics can be difficult, especially for beginners. Fortunately, there are some easy, practical steps you can take to overcome this challenge. First, you need to choose the best sewing tools for hemming and these include the right sewing machine, tools, and supplies. You will need a straight stitch plate on your machine, sliding hem gauge, pin, jeans 9 needles on your machine, and an iron with the ironing board, for this purpose.

Step 1: Pin or press your Jeans hem inside

Step 2: Mark the Hem Allowance

Turn the jeans legs outside out and set the seam gauge to 1 1/8” before placing the red part of the slide against the fold. Mark the hem allowance with chalk. Make sure the trim allowance mark is marked all around the jeans’ leg.

Step 3: Remove Pins and Trim Excess Length

Step 4: Fold Once Again to Form the Hem

Pull the raw edge backward and turn the hem allowance once while leaving a small gap between the first hem fold and the edge. Press the hot iron on the first fold to set it in and make the second fold easier. By allowing a 1/8” gap in between the edge and the first turn you will make the second fold flatter. Set your iron to the cotton-dry setting and press the final hem.

Step 5: Start Stitching

Turn your jeans outside out to the right side, and start stitching at the cross seam. Place one leg of the jeans on the free arm of your machine while turning in the right inside-out position. Align the bottom edge of the jeans leg while using the free-hand system to lift the presser foot before stitching. Release the presser foot after stitching.

Step 6: Secure the Hem

Tripple-straight stitch while allowing the needle down feature and begin sewing the hem seam, then lock the stitches after sewing. Stitch backward once the triple stitching reaches the starting point of the hem.

Step 7: Complete the Hemming

Cut the excess thread or another fiber to give your hemmed jeans a polished look. You may want to press once again with the hot iron to smoothen the hemmed part.
